Is Your System Due for an Upgrade?

Most AV Systems in San Antonio Were Installed 15 Years Ago

The home theater boom ran from roughly 2005 to 2012. Plasma TVs, Blu-ray players, Dolby 5.1 receivers, and CRT or early DLP projectors were flying out of showrooms. They were great systems — for 2008. But technology moved fast. HDMI ARC, 4K resolution, HDR, Dolby Atmos, and streaming integration weren't even on the radar when most of these systems were designed.

If your receiver doesn't have HDMI ARC, you can't run a single cable from your TV to your sound system. If your projector tops out at 1080p, you're not seeing what 4K content actually looks like. If you need four remotes to watch a movie — one for the receiver, one for the projector, one for the Blu-ray, one for the streaming box you wedged in as a workaround — the system has outgrown itself.

This isn't a failure on your part. It's just time. KZ Audio & Video has been servicing and upgrading AV systems in San Antonio since 1997. We've walked through hundreds of equipment rooms with homeowners who assumed their system was broken when it was just outdated. The good news: upgrades are almost always less expensive than a full replacement, and the result is dramatically better.

Signs Your System Needs an Upgrade

Receiver doesn't have HDMI ARC — you're running separate audio cables

Projector is 1080p or lower — no 4K, no HDR

No streaming without a separate workaround device

DVD or Blu-ray stack taking up an entire shelf in the equipment rack

Three or more remotes required to watch a movie

Can't control anything from your phone

Wiring is visible or tangled behind components

System was installed before 2015

Our Upgrade Process

We Keep What Works. We Replace What Doesn't.

The first step is always a free in-home assessment. We look at every component in your system, test what's working, and identify what's holding the system back. You get a clear picture of what you have and a specific upgrade recommendation — not a generic "you need everything new" upsell.

4K Projector Swap

Replace an aging 1080p or CRT projector with a current 4K laser or lamp projector. Night-and-day difference in picture quality. Laser projectors now last 20,000+ hours and never need a lamp replacement.

Dolby Atmos Receiver Upgrade

A current Dolby Atmos receiver adds height channels, HDMI ARC, 4K passthrough, and streaming services built in. It's usually the single component that unlocks the biggest system-wide improvement.

Streaming Integration

We add Apple TV 4K or equivalent, configure it cleanly in the equipment rack, and make sure it talks to your receiver and display correctly. No more dongles hanging off the back of the TV.

Phone & Single-Remote Control

Replace a drawer full of remotes with a single app or one universal remote. We configure Sonos, Control4, or a simpler solution depending on your system and how you actually use it.

Whole-House Audio Addition

Already upgrading the theater? It's the right time to add a Sonos whole-house audio system — kitchen, master bedroom, covered patio, pool — all controlled from one app.

In-Wall Speaker Replacement

Old in-wall or in-ceiling speakers that have lost their clarity or never sounded right can be swapped out cleanly. We match the existing cutout where possible and run any new wire that's needed.

Investment Context

Upgrades Cost a Fraction of a New Build

A full custom home theater — pre-wire, dedicated room, 4K laser projection, Dolby Atmos, tiered seating, acoustic treatment, full automation — runs $15,000 to $80,000 depending on scope and finishes. That's the right investment for someone building a dedicated room from scratch.

Most homeowners with an existing system don't need that. They need a targeted upgrade that addresses the specific bottlenecks — usually the receiver, the projection or display, and the control layer. Those upgrades typically run $3,000 to $15,000 installed, depending on how many components are being replaced and whether you're adding streaming and phone control.

We quote after seeing the room and the equipment. We'll tell you which components are genuinely worth keeping and where the budget is best spent. We can also phase the project if you want to spread the investment — start with the receiver and streaming, come back for the projector next year.

$1,500 – $3,500

Receiver swap + streaming setup (Dolby Atmos receiver + Apple TV 4K, installed and configured)

$3,000 – $8,000

4K projector upgrade (lamp or laser unit, mount, calibration)

$3,000 – $10,000

Receiver + projector + streaming + phone control — the most common full upgrade path

$6,000 – $15,000

Comprehensive upgrade: new receiver, projector, speakers, streaming, and automation

$15,000+

Full system replacement or new dedicated theater room build

Why KZ Audio & Video

In the Audio Business Since 1997. No Subcontractors.

KZ Audio & Video has been servicing and installing AV systems in San Antonio since 1997. Kelly, Billy, and Julian are the team — they answer the phone, they show up for the consultation, they do the installation, and they're the ones you call if anything ever needs attention afterward.

We don't use subcontractors. That matters for upgrade work in particular — because an upgrade requires understanding the existing system before touching it, and that requires experience, not a new crew that's never seen the room.

We have a 5.0 rating on Google because we tell clients what's actually worth doing, not what generates the largest invoice. If we walk your equipment room and determine the system just needs reconfiguration, we'll tell you that. If a component is repairable for $200, we'll tell you that too. The assessment is always free.

Free In-Home Assessment

We come to you, look at the system, and tell you exactly what we recommend — with a written quote. No charge for the assessment, no pressure on the quote.

Honest Equipment Advice

We tell you what's worth keeping and what isn't — even when keeping it means a smaller job for us. Our reputation is built on honest recommendations, not maximum invoice size.

Phased Upgrades Available

Not every upgrade has to happen at once. We'll prioritize the components that give you the biggest improvement per dollar and build a phased plan if that makes sense for your situation.

AV System Upgrades — Frequently Asked Questions

If your receiver doesn't have HDMI ARC, your projector tops out at 1080p, you can't stream Netflix or Disney+ without plugging in a separate dongle, or you're using four different remotes to watch a movie — your system is ready for an upgrade. Most systems installed between 2005 and 2012 were excellent for their time but are now a full technology generation behind. We'll come out, look at what you have, and give you an honest assessment of what's worth keeping and what the upgrade path looks like.

Not unless that's the right call. We assess each component individually. In-wall speaker wire is almost always worth keeping. In-ceiling speakers are often fine. A receiver from 2007 with no HDMI ARC, no 4K passthrough, and no streaming — that one usually goes. We'll tell you exactly what we recommend replacing and why, and we'll give you a phased option if budget is a concern. We don't do rip-and-replace for its own sake.

It depends heavily on scope. Swapping out an old receiver for a current Dolby Atmos model and adding streaming typically runs $2,500–$5,000 installed. Upgrading a projector to 4K laser adds $3,000–$8,000 depending on the unit. A more comprehensive upgrade — new receiver, new projector, updated speakers, streaming, and phone control — typically falls in the $6,000–$15,000 range. A full system replacement starts around $15,000 and goes up from there. We quote after seeing the room — never off a description.

Yes. This is one of the most common upgrade requests we get. If you're still managing your system with a stack of remotes, we can add a control layer — typically Sonos, Control4, or a simpler universal remote solution depending on your system — that lets you run everything from your phone or one remote. We assess what your existing equipment supports and design the simplest, most reliable solution.

Most commonly Apple TV 4K, which integrates cleanly with the rest of your home and gives you Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Max, and everything else in one box. We also configure Sonos for whole-house audio streaming, and for clients who want a more automated system, we set up control4 or Lutron integrations. We don't just hand you a device — we configure it, hide it in the rack, and make sure it works the way it should.
